Ocean Explorer Visit

We were lucky enough to have a visit from the lovely Riley from Ocean Explorers today. She gave us a very informative and interesting talk about looking after our Hauraki Gulf.

 The Bryde Whale can measure up to 15metres!! Check out Tamati and Bitner measuring it out with rope - it's as long as our hall!!

  1. Hi, my name is Anjola and the thing I learned at the assembly was that New Zealand has 5 out of 7 species of turtle's in the whole world
    Did you know that the first turtle that was ever born was born 220 million years ago?

    I really enjoyed learning about the sea and sea animals.
    One thing I learnt was that muscles (the seafood) can act as a filter to the ocean.

    Today we got to meet a young ocean explore'r Riley.
    I learnt that little fish called cleaner fish they go to the bottom of like a sting ray and eats all of the grime and dirt. Just like what mussels do. They clean out the water like a filter it eats up all the dirty water. That's what I learnt. Blog ya later

    🐬I learn the fin on the top is calledd a dorsal fin the flippers on the side is called pectoral fins and the tail is called a fluke.

  13. Hello Rachel. Alan here. Something that I learned today is that green shelled mussels can clean/filter 350l per day. Another thing I learned was that plankton are the small animals that makes water look green. thx

  14. Hi my name is Bitner. The most important thing that I learned was that mussels can clean 2 bathtubs of water per day. They suck in the water and eat all of the phytoplanktons and then poop the clean water out.

    I had fun learning about animals and the marine life in our oceans. I also found out that there were other Islands where the Hauraki Gulf is.
    Did you know that killer whales are actually a dolphin it is also the largest dolphin on the planet so they are not actually a whale. 🐳🐬🐢

  17. Hey I am Tai at the Ocean Explorer Visit I learnt that muscles can filter two bath tubes so it can fitter 350 litres and I also their is a challenge I learnt at Ocean Explorer Visit it is a easy challenge it is about you will pick up a piece of rubbish

    I learned that an Brutus Whale can go to 15 meters what is crazy big.

  22. Hay rm 6 it me Gina your favorite class mate here!
    We all whet to the hall to find Riley from Young Ocean Explores. We learnt the because of someone (I forgot her name) talked to boat companies to slow down boats to 10 knots so that when the boat's come in and out from the harbor, the won't hit and accidentally kill a Brutus whale.
    Did you know that muscles filter 3 liters of water a day?!
